At North Shore Animal League America, we know how tempting it can be to envision a puppy or kitten under the tree, but responsible adoption means more than just a seasonal surprise. Giving a pet as an unplanned holiday present can place unreasonable pressure on the new owner, especially if they haven’t had time to research, prepare their home, or truly consider how a dog or cat will fit into their long-term lifestyle. Additionally, the holiday season often comes with hectic schedules, travel, guests, and decorations; a whirlwind that’s far from ideal for a newly adopted animal’s emotional and physical adjustment.
A truly successful adoption begins with thoughtful planning, realistic expectations, and readiness for a long-term. When the time is right, North Shore Animal League America's experienced Adoption Counselors are available to guide families through the process. As Anthony Angioletti, Senior Director of Offsite Programs, explained: “If you want to make it a gift adoption, we suggest you wrap up a collar or a toy or a bowl or something to that effect and explain now we can go as a family and pick out the proper pet that will meet what we’re looking for. Meet with your adoption counselors. Do some research.”
Every animal on our campus has already been rescued from an uncertain future, nurtured with expert medical care, and prepared for the day they meet the family who will cherish them. When you choose adoption, you’re not just adding love to your home, you’re extending compassion to a pet who needs it most. This season, we invite families to come together, meet our incredible animals, and discover how meaningful it can be to give a homeless dog or cat a future filled with safety, warmth and love. A thoughtful approach will ensure every pet enters a home that is truly ready to welcome them, not just for the holidays, but for a lifetime.
